ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management System Requirements

The revision process for ISO 9001 continues under the direction of ISO/TC 176 Working Group 29. Following the submission of over 1,600 comments on Committee Draft 2, more than 900 items were addressed at a recent meeting in Paris. The next version of the Draft International Standard is anticipated later this year, after which stakeholders will be invited to review and provide feedback. The final version is scheduled for release in September 2026.

ISO 9001:2026 Revision – What to Expect

Industry-leading bodies NQA and DNV confirm that the Draft International Standard (DIS) for ISO 9001:2026 is on track:

Transition Period: Historically, ISO transitions allow up to three years, although DNV acknowledges that, due to the moderate nature of changes, this period may be shortened. The IAF DNV will issue final transition timelines.

Draft Stage: NQA indicates the DIS is expected between mid-2025 and early 2026. DNV confirms that the DIS is already released as of August 29, 2025, and is undergoing a 12-week review process.

Final Publication: The revised standard is anticipated in autumn 2026, most likely October or November, according to DNV. NQA concurs with a September 2026 release.

Scope of Key Updates

  • NQA emphasises increased focus on risk-based thinking, digitalisation, supply-chain oversight, ethical governance, and organisational resilience.
  • DNV outlines specific enhancements in the DIS draft version:
    • Leadership and quality culture: Expanded guidance under Clause 5.1 to promote ethical leadership.
    • Risk vs. opportunity management: Clearer separation and new subclauses (6.1.1–6.1.3).
    • Climate change integration: Amendments from 2024 added into Clauses 4.1 and 4.2.
    • Annex A: Significantly expanded to enhance guidance aligned with Clauses 4–10.

Practical Recommendations for Organisations

Both NQA and DNV agree that planning is essential. Here are practical steps to take now:

Prepare for audits — Schedule transitional audits in advance to ensure your certification remains uninterrupted.

Stay informed — Subscribe to updates, attend webinars, and review draft materials as they become available.

Conduct gap assessments — Compare your current QMS with expected changes and draft guidance.

Update documentation and training — Incorporate clarified expectations into your processes and staff training.
