Transport Malta has issued Merchant Shipping Notice 186 for Shipowners, Ship Operators, Managers, Masters, Owners’ Representatives and Recognised Organisations.

The Directorate alerts everyone in question to the growing security risk in the Red Sea. Before continuing with their navigation in this area, all ships operating in the maritime area are required to observe all security and advisory notices issued by the multinational coordination centres and to maintain good communication.

Given the high hazards and potential for collateral threats, ships are advised to stay clear of the South Red Sea and avoid the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until the situation de-escalates.

Ships are currently advised to stay clear of the South Red Sea

It is strongly urged that Maltese ship operators and masters who operate or may operate in this area assess the security situation in the area to ascertain whether their presence in it is safe. Therefore, ship commanders and operators of Maltese ships are strongly recommended to proceed with extreme caution and a high state of vigilance if they determine that it is necessary to go to this area.

All ships must apply the required precautionary measures to ensure the safety of their crew and assets.
